How Roamer measures
How Roamer measures
Rivian shares a limited set of readings with apps like Roamer. Here's how Roamer turns them into the numbers you see, and why they can differ from your vehicle's display.
Updated Oct 26, 2026
Why are short drives combined into one?
A drive runs until you park for more than 10 minutes, so a quick stop for coffee stays part of one drive. With Roamer Plus, change this under Drive recording → Split after in Account → Preferences, from 0 to 60 minutes. At 0, a new drive starts every time you shift out of Park. Minimum drive on the same page stops Roamer from recording drives shorter than it. Changes apply to drives recorded after you make them.
If your vehicle loses its connection mid-drive, in a tunnel or out of cell range, the drive stays whole unless data is missing for more than 10 minutes. Miles driven while data was missing aren't in any drive.
Why is a drive or charge missing?
Check these first:
- Reconnect. If Roamer shows Reconnect Your Rivian Account, reconnect it.
- Roamer Plus. Drives and charges need Roamer Plus. Nothing is recorded while it's off.
- Drive recording. Minimum drive may have kept a short drive from being recorded, or Split after may have joined it to the drive before.
Otherwise, Rivian stopped sending data. Your vehicle had no signal, Rivian had an outage, several apps were reading your Rivian account and Rivian limited them (link Roamer through a secondary driver account). Roamer can't fill in a gap afterward.
Still missing? Email support@rivianroamer.com with the vehicle, date and time. Don't unlink your Rivian account to fix it. Unlinking deletes your history.
Why does Mileage show more miles than my drives?
The Mileage page counts how far your odometer moved. Your drives add up the miles Roamer recorded, so miles driven during a data gap are on the odometer but not in any drive.
Where does top speed come from?
Top speed, average speed and the speed chart come from your vehicle's GPS. While you navigate, Rivian also sends the navigation system's speed, which sometimes reads double or more. Roamer leaves out a navigation speed when the vehicle didn't cover the ground to match it, and any reading over 150 mph.
How is range rounded?
Rivian sends range in whole kilometers. Like the Rivian app, Roamer rounds your current range down to whole miles, and shows kilometers as Rivian sent them.
Why does a charge last overnight?
A charge is one plug-in. It runs from the first time your vehicle starts charging to the last time it stops before you unplug. Scheduled pauses and top-ups in between are part of the same charge, so a charge can span the night when energy went in for only part of it. A plug-in that never charges isn't recorded.
Which saved place is a drive or charge at?
The saved place whose radius it happened inside, the smallest one if two overlap. A charge your vehicle reported at the Home saved in your Rivian account is at your Home place too when it's within 250 m (820 ft) of it, even outside the radius you drew. Farther away it still counts as charging at home, but it stays off your Home place: past 250 m, your Rivian Home and your Roamer Home are different addresses.
How is a charge priced?
In this order:
- A total you entered on the charge.
- A rate you entered on the charge, or the price of the saved place where you charged. At Home, that's your Home rate.
- $0 for a free charge on the Rivian Adventure Network.
- For a DC fast charge, the cost Rivian reports.
- Your default rate.
A charge with none of these stays unpriced instead of showing $0. Drives are priced at your Home rate, or your default rate if Home has none.
Set your default rate under Charging costs in Account → Preferences. Your Home rate is the price of your Home place in Locations.
How do I change what one charge cost?
Open the charge, choose Edit, and enter the Total Cost. A DC fast charge Roamer couldn't price also shows Add what you paid. Use a total when your receipt has a discount, a session fee, tax, or a price different from your rate.
I changed my rate. Why didn't old charges change?
New rates apply to new charges. To reprice earlier ones, choose Also update past charges when you save your default rate, or Recalculate charging costs when you save a place's price. For your Home place that reprices every drive too. If you cleared the place's price, its past charges get your default rate. Rates and totals you entered on a charge, and DC fast costs Rivian billed, stay as they are.
Does Roamer support time-of-use rates?
No. Each place has one rate. For a charge that crossed rate periods, enter what you paid as its Total Cost.
Is a charge DC fast or Level 2?
Rivian reports whether the charger supplies DC or AC. DC counts as DC fast and AC as Level 2, at any speed. When a charge has no report, including charges from before Roamer recorded it, it counts as DC fast if it peaks above 20 kW and lasts under 3 hours. A Rivian draws under 12 kW on Level 2, so the 20 kW line sits well clear of it.
Why is Roamer's efficiency different from my vehicle's?
Rivian doesn't share how much energy a drive used. Roamer works it out from the battery percentage and the battery's usable capacity, read throughout the drive, and the distance on your odometer. That includes climate and anything plugged into the outlets, minus what regenerative braking put back.
The two differ because:
- Your vehicle has its own meter, and Rivian doesn't share it with apps. Roamer sees the battery percentage, which moves in 0.1% steps of about a tenth of a kWh. One step is a big share of a short drive.
- The battery re-estimates its charge. A cold battery reports less usable energy.
- The span is different. Your vehicle's trip figures don't start and stop where a Roamer drive does.
Compare a long drive or a week of driving. Roamer leaves efficiency blank for drives under half a mile, drives that used too little energy to measure, and drives that came out implausibly high. Imported drives keep the efficiency the other app recorded.
Does lower battery capacity mean degradation?
Not by itself. Roamer shows the usable energy your vehicle reports, and it dips in cold weather. On the Battery page, capacity above your pack's buffer line is buffer, which absorbs wear before you lose range. If capacity stays below the line, your full-charge range drops.
Why is my battery size wrong?
Roamer works out your pack from what Rivian reports. If it picked the wrong one, open your vehicle's Settings and choose the right size under Battery → Size. The list shows only sizes your vehicle can have. This needs Roamer Plus. If your size isn't listed, email support@rivianroamer.com.
How is phantom drain measured?
With Roamer Plus, the Battery page follows the battery reading from parking to your next drive or charge, leaves out climate use such as preconditioning and the hours an R1's Camping energy setting keeps it awake on Stay On, and shows the loss as a percent per 24 hours parked, and charts each day's loss split into Gear Guard, awake and asleep. Temperature and calibration also move the battery estimate, so it can rise for a while after a hard drive. Checking Roamer doesn't add to it.
How do Insights comparisons work?
Insights has the same date ranges as Activity, covering the same drives and charges.
"Vs last month" and the other comparisons are against the period before. Today, this week, this month and this year are compared up to the same point: on the 25th, this month is compared with the 1st through the 25th of last month. Last 7 days, last 30 days and custom ranges are compared with the same number of days just before them. Since last charge and all history have no comparison.
Charge levels, phantom drain and the Mileage page come from daily records, which run midnight to midnight Pacific time and can't be split within a day. Since last charge reads them for each whole day it has run, so it can take in a few hours before the charge ended, or leave out a few hours after it on the night it ended.
Why is pack temperature missing?
R1s from 2025 on don't report a real pack temperature, so Roamer leaves it out for them instead of showing a wrong number.
How are fuel savings calculated?
Roamer compares what your electricity cost with what the same miles would cost in gas, in a 25 MPG vehicle at the US weekly average price of premium. A drive uses your Home rate, or your default rate. A charge compares the range it added at what that charge cost. Each keeps the gas price from when it was recorded.
With Roamer Plus, set your own comparison under Fuel comparison in Account → Preferences. New values apply to past drives only if you choose Also update past comparisons.
Where do charger grades come from?
From Rivian, which grades some sites from A to F. Most sites have no grade. Networks other than the Rivian Adventure Network show a grade averaged from their DC fast sites.
